Chaos Alert: A day in the Life of a Content Marketer

If you’re reading this or landed here because of your ‘search’ – congratulations! This is now your insight in the life of a Content Marketer. You’re officially a part of the content marketing world – the one that will nudge (sometimes, push) you to write creative copies every day, create editorial calendars, manage social media platforms, look into the inbound/ outbound marketing campaigns, make sure everything is set for SEO..and well, you get the drift. 

As a content marketer, I strongly feel it isn’t just about ‘walking the walk, while talking the talk’. It takes a lot more to be one – if you are actually honest about it!

93% of B2B marketers and 90% of B2C marketers are in content marketing tactics for their brands. There are only 42% and 34% B2B and B2C marketers, that feel any of their efforts are effective. And the sad part of it? They need to face the wrath of their business owners every other day for not doing enough.

So what does a day in the life of a content marketer look like? Mine looks somewhat like this:

Early morning shenanigans

7:30 am – Wake up, take a look at the to-do list kept on the bedside and go back to sleep for another 5 minutes. Eventually roll out of bed – because there is so much to do!

8:00 am – Catch up with industry news, because God knows why the world can’t just sleep and do nothing sometimes!

9:30 am – Sit down fresh with a bowl of fruits and login to your email accounts only to see 200 messages that you need to respond to! Reply to a few and get back to your content calendar.

The writer mode

10:00 am – Publish the blog post that you fine-tuned the previous day.

11:00 am – Gulp down a cup of tea and start writing like your life depends on it!

3:00 pm – Go on a scavenger hunt because all the writing has made you hungry and there’s still so much do through the day.

The marketer mode

3:30 pm – Strategise how you’re going to market the blog you published in the morning. Then sit down with your marketing head to discuss monthly goals – head back, rehash the entire strategy.

The writer mode (again)

4:00 pm – Sit down and write some more, because you can never run out of words.

6:00 pm – Deal with about 10 more emails and chuck the rest for tomorrow.

The marketer mode (again)

6:30 pm – Schedule posts on social platforms for the next day as per the content calendar and the new goals your head just passed on to you.

7:00 pm – Crunch on some numbers (ROI! ROI! ROI!), frame the daily report email, and finally shut everything down.

Planning it out

8:00 pm – Switch the laptop back on, try and not check on calendars (which is a habit by now), raid Netflix – because, everyone needs some inspiration!

10:00 pm – Pick out the wackiest colored stick-ons, hunt for a pen that at least works a bit and create a to-do list for the next day.  

Calling it a day

11:00 pm – Think of wrapping up some of work from next day, end up responding to emails because that’s so much easier!

12:00 am – Try and sleep thinking about how you need to start early and get things done through the day.
