1. Define your mission:

The first step is to define the mission. Well it does not have to be done so formally like a real organization and it does not have to be etched in stone. But you must have a clear idea about what you want to achieve through this exercise. You can of course modify the same as you progress but in general your mission should guide all your activities.

2. Know your target audience:

Before you do anything else, take some time to know your audience. Who are your potential clients? What is their demographic background? What should you say to such people in order to grab their attention? Every segment is different in terms of preferences and attitudes. You need to know your own.

3. Build online presence:

Online presence is not only for online businesses. Even if you have a different business such as a restaurant or a clinic, people can find you through a simple Google search. So, you must build your presence very carefully. This includes your website, blog and your social media accounts. All of them must be carefully built up to give a clear idea of your skills and offerings. You should also get listed in relevant online directories or databases. Show and tell, at all times.

4. Create quality content:

Online presence must be expanded further through content marketing. Every business must have a blog where they discuss issues and themes related to their business. They can offer helpful tips to people to show off their knowledge and expertise. This is the best way to build a powerful image and it is way more effective than a direct advertisement.

5. Don’t ignore PR:

Just like big corporations, even small businesses or individuals must not ignore PR. Build good contacts and get your work featured in the media. For instance, if you are a freelance photographer and one of your mages gets published in a national newspaper, it will do your personal brand a whole lot of good. Always find ways to increase your reach.

6. Connect with the influencers:

When you are new in the field, you should not hesitate to reach out to people who are already considered experts. Endorsement of such “influencers” can help you convince your clients. If you have a good rapport with bigger names, that will also enhance your image by association.

7. Interact with your fans:

As you build the brand, you will also develop a fan following. But to make the most of it, you need to interact with them regularly in an authentic manner. If you do so freely and help them out occasionally, they will help generate word of mouth publicity for you. The best way to do so is through social media. That is why you need to be active in such networks.

8. Promote:

Individuals do not have a great budget to promote themselves. But it is not impossible to do so. If you have some money to spend, you can try various options. For instance, Facebook adverts can be done at very low costs. Of course you may not reach too many people at first but you should get an idea about how these adverts and promotions work. Similarly, you can pay to get featured in various blogs, PR sites and portals.

9. Analyze and improvise:

Eventually you need to analyse and improve. Check your website analytics, social media analytics and also the statistics from your ad campaigns, if any. You need to consistently measure your efforts and find out the chinks and improve them.
